Description
The Golden Gate. The name was given to this stretch of water before the bridge was built or gold was discovered in California. The first mention of this was in Jon Freemont's memoirs where he wrote in 1846 "To this Gate I gave the name of "Chrysopylae", or "Golden Gate";
I had previous thought that it was given that name due to the boat traffic in and out of San Francisco Bay during the Gold Rush.
The Golden Gate Bridge was completed in 1937. The bridge has become iconic and one of the very recognizable symbols of the State of California.
The Golden Gate Bridge is by estimation, the most photographed bridge in the world.
This image was captured on what was actually a cold day in February from the San Francisco side of the bridge. The wind was whipping up as noted by the whitecaps on the bay and the temperatures were in the mid 40's. The sun was out and that would normally portray a nice warm day but during the winter when the sun is out there aren't any clouds in the sky to hold any of the heat.
I do like the lighting on this image and the ship passing below in the bay.
