It was designed by Santiago Calatrava, an internationally renown architect, engineer, sculptor and artist from Valencia, Spain. Of the more than 42 bridges he has created around the world, this is his first in the United States.
The Cable-Stayed Bridge design features a 400 foot center arch. There are 58 cables which, if laid end to end, would stretch 5 miles. The steel to build the bridge was fabricated in Italy and shipped to Houston. The Arch was initially assembled on the ground in Italy to ensure the pieces fit correctly before being disassembled and shipped. There are more than 200 lights illuminating the bridge, arch and cables.
The arch by itself weighs 3,083,118 pounds and there is a total of 11,643,674 pounds of structural steel used in the entire bridge.
