Description
It was an embarrassment of riches, a red-lored parrot, or red-lored amazon, on the grounds of our lodgings in Port Jimenez Costa Rica. No long drive to a preserve, just walk out the door of your room, wait awhile, and prepare to be amazed! Like most amazon parrots they vocalize loudly so you hear them first and search the trees until you find them. Four subspecies of the Red-lored Parrot are recognized over its rather wide range, differing chiefly in the amount of red on the head. The red-lored amazon is 32–35 cm (13 in) in length, with a weight of 310–480 g.
