Description
Have you ever wondered what is in the mind of sculptors when they imagine and design their works of art? Study the pedestal for the Angel Caido or Fallen Angel statue located in the gardens of the expansive Parque del Buen Retiro in Madrid Spain and well….keep on wondering! The statue itself depicts Lucifer at the moment he is cast out of Heaven, as inspired by a passage in John Milton's Paradise Lost. The pedestal shown here is octagonal with figures of devils on each side gripping fishes, lizards and snakes all spouting water. Many of the tour books say that the Fallen Angel statue is 'arguably the only public statue in the world dedicated to the devil himself.' Although is evoked scandal at the time of its creation, the dramatic sculpture first made in plaster proved to be an artistic success, obtaining the First Medal at the Spanish National Fine Arts Exhibition in 1878, and was later cast in bronze for the grand Exposition Universelle, better known as the third Paris World's Fair in 1879. It was inaugurated at its current location in 1885.
