Found (Lost Lake) 2015
I am interested in how the mind finds refuge amid suffering. Especially in recent years, I have felt that we are at times surrounded, suffocated by the brutal and disturbing ways people harm one another. We are almost constantly bombarded with sensational headlines of cruelty and division. This has caused new purpose in my painting: to offer a place for the mind to rest. These paintings are the result of my own need for a sheltering space and my own wish to find a way to somehow be of help to someone who might also be hurting.
Hovering somewhere above this ground of destruction and loss is an essential kindness that we all have access to and can offer to one another. In my paintings, this place of rest and refuge is often represented in the form of a cupped flower, detached from the landscape that is in ruins but still hovering there in compassion, not too far away.
